C0196
Yaw Rate Sensor Circuit Malfunction
What it means
C0196. Yaw Rate Sensor Circuit Malfunction. This Chevy-enhanced code applies to Cruze, Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Escalade.
Findings, check these first
- Failed yaw rate sensor inside the SDM or multi-axis acceleration sensor
- Stone impacts to the transmission tunnel sending resonant spikes through the yaw sensor
- Open or shorted yaw rate signal circuit between the sensor and the EBCM
- Corroded connector at the sensor module
Standard procedure
- Read the symptom byte with a Tech2 or GDS2; a 5A byte indicates a plausibility fault, not a dead sensor
- Inspect the underside of the transmission tunnel for stone impact damage per GM bulletin 15-05-25-001
- Test the yaw rate signal circuit for opens and shorts per GM service information
- Check sensor connectors for corrosion before replacing parts
- Replace the sensor module only on confirmed circuit-verified failure, then road test to confirm the Service StabiliTrak message stays off
