EGR Valve Pintle Position Circuit
What it means
P1406. EGR Valve Pintle Position Circuit. This Chevy-enhanced code applies to Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Impala.
Findings, check these first
- Carbon buildup jamming the EGR valve pintle open or closed
- Failed EGR valve position sensor on 4.8L, 5.3L and 6.0L Vortec engines
- Corroded EGR valve connector from heat cycling near the intake manifold
- Open or shorted 5-volt reference wire to the EGR pintle position sensor
Standard procedure
- Command the EGR valve open and closed with a Tech2/GDS2 scan tool and watch pintle position response
- Remove the EGR valve and inspect for carbon packing before ordering a replacement
- Back-probe the pintle position signal wire and verify smooth voltage sweep, not just code reading
- Repair wiring and connector first; replace the valve only if the pintle sticks when actuated by hand
